Caring for the mind as well as the body

Three times a week St Luke’s holds a Complementary Therapies for Health & Well-Being Clinic with a range of treatments that bring physical benefits to the body as well easing anxiety, stress and other emotional issues.

The clinics run between 10am and 3pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, and from 2.30pm to 8.30pm on Thursdays. For details of how to enrol in the clinic, please ring 01606 551246 any day between 9am and 5pm.

Currently, our Complementary Therapies for Health & Well-Being Clinic offers the following:

Reflexology

This gentle treatment involves massaging the nerve endings found in your feet, to give a beneficial effect throughout the whole body. The stimulation helps you to thoroughly relax, which in turn eases stress and tension. Reflexology also improves circulation and encourages your body to use its own formidable capacity for self-healing.

Aromatherapy

Fragrant essential oils, extracted from natural plant sources, are used in this massage. Your skin absorbs their goodness and your whole body benefits from a reduction in tension, emotional stress, anxiety and oedema. Aromatherapy also relieves nausea, headaches, skin irritations and scar tissue, as well as promoting pain relief and restful sleep.

Reiki

Reiki is a natural and ancient form of holistic healing. The practitioner’s hands channel energy to treat your mind, body and spirit. Used in conjunction with other therapies, Reiki provides a deep, healing relaxation, body detoxification, an increase in your natural vibration frequency and helps dissolve energy blockages.

Hypnotherapy

This treatment places you in a deeply relaxed state that activates your imagination, rather than your intellect. Although you are awake, aware of your surroundings and in control at all times, the hypnosis can bring physical and emotional benefits via positive thinking and visualisation; increasing your fighting spirit, empowering you, reducing anxiety and helping improve your quality of life.

Group Work

You may find that working together as a group enhances the benefits of many treatments. We offer hypnotherapy, yoga, Tai Chi and Carers’ groups.

Relaxation Plus Group Work

This group work is designed to offer an opportunity to discover and develop new skills that will support individual ability to relax. Two therapeutic disciplines are combined to create a different approach to relaxation that is both powerful and enjoyable.

We hold the belief that the mind and body are one interconnected system. In the sessions a clinical hypnotherapist teaches approaches that can calm the mind. A body therapist teaches breathing exercises based on yogic principles and self massage techniques that can help calm the body. All therapies in some form or other overlap and complement each other.

With regular practice at home, an individual will have their own personal “tool box” of skills to help them in living their life after their illness experience.

Physiotherapy

Our skilled and dedicated team of physiotherapists can plan exercise programmes and treatments designed specifically to help you in a number of ways. Pain relief and management, for example, is provided by acupuncture and electrical treatments like TENS. Breathing control techniques can help you control breathlessness naturally and lymphoedema can also be managed by specific treatments.
