Some people may know Ernie Welch as the landlord of the The Old Star pub in Winsford (and may also know him as a previous landlord of The Rifleman). From 7 April, Ernie is taking on an Irish Cycling challenge of a lifetime and raising money for St Luke’s, as well as the Mayo Roscommon Hospice in Ireland.
He will be cycling to Holyhead over 2 days, using designated cycle routes, a route of about 120 miles.
Ernie says “I intend to cycle to Holyhead over two days, travel to Dunlaghorie by ferry then cycle to Mullingar which is about 70 miles due west (and have an overnight stay.) From there, it will be another 70 miles to Balyhaunis in County Mayo, have a rest day, then travel some 45 miles to Croagh Patrick where there is a mountain nicknamed The Reek 764 metres high which I will climb. I’ll be travelling back to England by more conventional methods! I will have a full support team and two support vehicles with me.”
Ernie if hoping to get good media coverage from TV, radio and the press. Irish ‘TV Out and About’ (that goes out on Sky 191) are going to film him at various points on the challenge.
