Kind-hearted students are set for 12 months of fun and fundraising after choosing a local hospice as their Charity of the Year.
The students from The Winsford Academy have chosen to raise much-needed funds for St Luke’s Hospice and will be organising a wide range of fantastic events and challenges over the coming weeks and months, with the aim of raising around £1,000.
To thank the generous youngsters for their support, staff from St Luke’s Mark Porter and Angela Slack, along with Hospice Ambassador Cllr Mike Kennedy popped along to pay a surprise visit with Luke, the Hospice’s distinctive refurbished red Routemaster double-decker London bus.
Mark Porter commented: “Even though it was a wet and windy morning, the students’ enthusiasm for St Luke’s certainly hadn’t been dampened. It’s fantastic to see so many young people really engaged with their local community, and we’re sure the students will have lots of fun during all of their upcoming fundraising events. More importantly though, they’ll also be raising the much-needed funds that help our Hospice deliver vital care and services to local people.”
Cllr Mike Kennedy added: “As a volunteer Ambassador for St Luke’s Hospice I had a conversation a while ago with Jo Tringham of the Academy to see if the school would take part in a particular fundraising event being held at the time. I also stated how it costs more than £8,600 a day to run the Hospice for just one day.”
“It was with great delight when I had another meeting with Jo she told me that the Principal Andy Taylor-Edwards had agreed that the Academy could adopt St Luke’s as its charity. We’d like to thank the students and The Winsford Academy for such a great gesture.”
Rhys Harrison Year 10 aged 15 at The Winsford Academy said: “This is a great opportunity to be involved in raising money for a worthwhile local cause. Many of our families have been affected by cancer and helping to raise money to support local families gives a sense of belonging to our community.”
