October 2015 saw the introduction of the 5p bag charge to retailers across the country. Recognising an opportunity, Ian Handley of Handley’s News and Convenience Store, Sandiway took the decision to kindly donate the 5p from each carrier bag charge to St Luke’s Hospice.

Between October 2015 and January 2016, watching the pennies certainly took take of the pounds as the amazing customers of Handley’s have raised an incredible £135.00 for St Luke’s.

Mr Handley who has had personal experience with St Luke’s said, “My Grandmother was at St Luke’s about twelve years ago. It’s an amazing place and it brings a lot of support to many local people. The Hospice is a big part of the community and has had an effect on a lot of customers that come in to the store. We found people were more than happy to donate the 5p bag charge for St Luke’s! 5p a time has added up and we’ve also reduced the number of carrier bags we use by 70%.”

Vickie Baddeley, St Luke’s Corporate and Community Fundraiser said “We’d like to say a big thank you to Mr Handley and all of the customers who donated. The support we receive from local businesses and residents is incredible and we really appreciate being chosen for the donation.”

The funds raised will help us to secure the future of the Hospice and ensuring that we can continue the care and support we provide for local people with life-limiting illnesses and their families. St Luke’s Hospice needs to raise £8,600 a day to provide vital care and services for people in mid and south Cheshire.
