Dave Pickles is gearing up to take on an amazing physical challenge for St Luke’s. On Saturday 2nd April, Dave will consecutively swim for 4 hours, bike for 4 hours and run for 4 hours in an extreme tri-sport challenge that will also mark the opening of the ‘flagship’ Crewe Lifestyle Centre.

Incredibly, after suffering a serious back injury three years ago, Dave was told that he would never run again, yet he managed to overcome this without surgery. He sees this feat as an opportunity to provide inspiration and hope to people in the Cheshire community.

David said “I love to see people coming together, I want children, including my daughter, to believe that they can do anything. I really want people to feel connected to the event, and to come along and ride a bike or run with me for 10 minutes, half an hour, even the 4 hours! It’d be great if other people took up something new for a good reason.”

Dave chose to support St Luke’s after his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2014 and they both received complementary therapies, including reflexology, at St Luke’s. Describing St Luke’s as “a pillar of strength within the community”, Dave said, “the service provided to my wife and us as a family was critical during a time of deep darkness. The love, kindness, care and beautiful human nature of those working at St. Luke’s Hospice within the Cheshire community is essential to helping those touched by cancer.”

Dave’s incredible challenge is a way of saying thank you from his family to St Luke’s. “I want to raise as much as possible for St Luke’s, and it’s also about raising awareness”, he said, “You might not know about St Luke’s unless you need the support, but walking in here is like walking into a little oasis. It is fantastic.”

Angela Slack, Corporate and Community Fundraiser at St Luke’s said, “This is such a fantastic challenge! We are so grateful for Dave’s ongoing support for St Luke’s. I’m looking forward to joining Dave for part of his cycle on the big day!”

Until April, Dave will be putting himself through a gruelling 10 week training programme; at week 3 he is spending a demanding 11 hours each week in the gym, and by April this will have increased to a maximum of 9 hours a day on each Tuesday and Saturday!

The new Crewe Lifestyle centre will be running a live feed of Dave’s event on the day and are encouraging people to get involved! You can support Dave and St Luke’s by donating on his JustGiving page.
