A Middlewich barber is preparing to push herself to the limits once again to raise vital funds for St Luke’s Hospice in Winsford. Jennifer Snelson, who lives in Winterley, will take on the Fan Dance on 3rd July, a gruelling endurance challenge used as part of the SAS selection process.
The race will see Jennifer scrabbling up and down Pen Y Fan in a 25 km challenge wherein she must also carry a rucksack of 25lb, as well as food and water.
But Jennifer is no stranger to challenging herself for St Luke’s. At the end of May she completed a 62 mile London to Brighton walk which took 27 hours and had a 25% drop out rate.
She said “I didn’t realise how difficult it was going to be, but the terrain was tough, through farmers’ fields and over stiles, and at night we only had a headtorch. After about 25 miles I remember seeing people on the floor, grown men crying. It was just so hard. Fatigue set in at night and I was twitching because I was so tired and falling asleep. I was hallucinating and could barely put one foot in front of the other, I didn’t think I was going to finish it.”
“Its taken me about two weeks to get over the walk. I’m missing three toenails and have about fifteen blisters; I’ve only just been able to put my shoes back on!”
Jennifer was inspired to fundraise for St Luke’s after her friend Chris’s granddad was cared for by the team at St Luke’s. His family and friends did a bike ride but Jennifer was working so couldn’t take part. That’s when she decided that she wanted to do something to help, especially after she sadly lost two close friends to cancer.
“Working in Middlewich means that so many people I know have connections with St Luke’s. I know a couple of people who have been there, and so many other people know someone else who has experienced the support that St Luke’s provide. I want to try and do something different every year for them.”
Vickie Baddeley, Community Fundraiser at St Luke’s, said, “What an incredible woman. We want to thank her so much for her support.”
