One of our longest serving shop volunteers has celebrated her milestone 90th birthday and in true St Luke’s style, we ensured she was made to feel special.
Margaret Thomas, from Cuddington, has volunteered at our Hartford shop for an incredible 12 years and was presented with cards and flowers to acknowledge her big day and to thank her for her long-standing commitment to St Luke’s.
Many of our volunteers have personal reasons for supporting St Luke’s, others like to feel as though they are giving something back or are putting some of their spare time to good use.
Margaret, a former PA and Secretary, decided to volunteer for something to do and to keep active.
“I initially popped into the Hartford shop 12 years ago for a blouse – I suppose you could say the rest is history! After losing my husband I didn’t want to be on my own all of the time so I decided to volunteer for a few days a week. It’s something I look forward to – the days go quickly when you have company and I get to meet so many lovely people.”
90th birthday celebrations
Staff at the shop arranged a surprise birthday gathering with Margaret’s fellow colleagues, volunteers and even some customers who she has become so friendly with.
“I couldn’t believe it when I walked into the pub and saw everyone had got together for me. It was a lovely, happy atmosphere and I was completely overwhelmed – people have been so kind,” added Margaret.
Retail Sales Manager, Patricia Birtwisle, paid tribute to Margaret:
“Margaret is a popular, well-known character in our shop. We wanted to make a big fuss of her on her special birthday and take her by surprise – and I think we did!”
As well as financial donations, St Luke’s relies on the help and support of volunteers; they make a huge contribution and we value each and every one of them. Their dedication, passion and enthusiasm for the Hospice is incredible and Margaret epitomises everything amazing about a St Luke’s volunteer.
